Kiwi Olympic bronze middle distance runner Jason Stewart says he and Nick Willis had their suspicions that Rashid Ramzi was a drug cheat.
Willis might be in line for a medal upgrade, but he's not about to bag Bahrain's Rashid Ramzi - the Beijing race winner under investigation for using performance-enhancing drugs.
Stewart, says he and Willis had their doubts about Rashid Ramzi, who they watched rise to win prestigious international middle distance races.
“A lot of the time if something seems too good to be true - it's probably not true so we had our suspicions,” says Stewart.
Stewart is prepared to go public to clean up the sport, but he understands Willis' reluctance.
“I’ve got to protect my heart as well so I don't want to let my emotions get the better of me for some reason it doesn't affect my quality of life as well,” says Willis.
And his quality of life's improving. When he recuperates from a hip operation, Willis is targeting the 800 metres at the World Championships in August. By then Ramzi's fate should be decided -- disgraced drug cheat or Olympic champion.
