A Tauranga teenager has been arrested following an attempted robbery at the city's Bethlehem Shopping Centre yesterday.

Shortly before midday a man threatened staff at the Dollar Value store with what appeared to be a metal weightlifting bar.

He demanded cash but left empty handed.

A 17-year-old has been charged with assault with intent to rob.

The alleged offender was wearing a dark jacket and carrying a blue bag and Detective Bryan Dudley said police wanted to hear from any witnesses.
