Police are investigating whether a mother, who gave birth on an international flight that landed in Auckland this morning, tried to abandon her new born baby.

Auckland International Airport staff have revealed some details of the incident but police are yet to confirm many of them.

It is known that a flight landed from Apia at around 5:40am. It is believed the baby was discovered by cleaning staff in a cubicle on the plane at around 7:00am.

The baby and mother were taken to Middlemore Hospital where they remain under observation.

According to a Middlemore Hospital spokeswoman who talked to Radio Live, both are doing fine.

Police will only confirm they are investigating the incident and Child Youth and Family says it is not yet involved.

Let's hope it was nothing more sinister.

I had my lovely little girl in the bathroom of a Subway (restaurant). Sometimes babies just come quickly, much to the surprise of medical experts! She was three weeks early, and the doctors and midwives were sure I had hours left. Maybe this woman had had the same things told to her, and left the baby to look for help, but was disorientated by the shock.
