New Zealand rider Andrew Nicholson is set for a thrilling head-to-head battle with Olympic champion Michael Jung at the Boekelo CCI three-star competition in the Netherlands.

Jung, from Germany, leads the 112-strong field after a stunning dressage performance on Halunke FBW but Nicholson, recent winner of the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, is just 4.4 penalties behind aboard Quimbo heading into the cross-country phase on Saturday night (NZ time).

Fellow Kiwi Tim Price, on Wesko, is sitting in seventh place with 41.6 penalties. The other New Zealanders in the field are Mark Todd, in 23rd place on Quantum Leap with 46.00 and Jesse Campbell, in 27th on Kaapachino with a score of 47.40.
