On Tuesday night we spoke to Christchurch mayor Bob Parker about the tension within his council over the $68,000 dollar pay rise awarded to its chief executive Tony Marryatt.

Local Government Minister Nick Smith met with Mr Marryatt this afternoon, and as a result of that meeting, Mr Marryatt has asked for the council to stop his pay rise from today.

We invited Mr Marryatt on to the programme - he declined. But Dr Smith joins us live from Christchurch.

Calais are you employed by the council, do you even live in Christchurch? Because you would honestly have to be amazingly out of touch to make a statement like that otherwise - Tony Marryatt has been responsible for the most expensive blunders in the history of Christchurch City - Henderson Properties alone will cost this city millions of dollars going forward, the cost of the other Marryatt initiatives as well as his conflict of interest with a number of other companies where is a director, make him unsuited to the role of CEO. And to pay him over half a million dollars a year is scandalous. He is disliked by a large number of the CCC staff and the only ones who adore him are the people who have been the recipients of his favours and rewards. Read up on the Marryatt experience in Hamilton.

Marryatt obviously has extensive experience in his field and has worked hard to get where he is today, he deserves the pay he is recieving. At least Christchurch is in good hands.

A good initial response from the government but it needs to be remembered that this issue is not just about a pay rise. It is about Henderson, music conservatorium, light rail, Ellerslie Flower Show, call centre transfer, bail out of private companies, failure of council companies (VBase), inadequate insurance cover, conflicts of interest(Maryatt & Civic Assurance) and on and on. It is about poor governance, poor leadership and personal agendas. Remember all this at the next election. You get what you vote for.
