Maryatt's huge pay increase is a point of contention with Christchurch councillors

Local Government Minister Nick Smith is heading to Christchurch today to bang some council heads together.

The council is in turmoil following a week of public spats and months of internal squabbles, in particular over CEO Tony Marryatt and his massive pay rise.

But Councillor Sue Wells says the issues are with council, and not individuals like Mayor Bob Parker:

“This has nothing to do with Bob,” says Ms Wells. “I’m not pro-Bob, I’m not anti-Bob. I’m pro-council.”

“And pro-city and I always have been. And what I want to be part of is a well-governed city.”

Ms Wells says the divisions began to surface as early as May last year.

Maryatt would have known what he would be responable for when he undertook
this position and excepted the salary that went with it,many people work hard multi task etc and are paid a little more than $13.00 a hour, the late 80s and 90s most workers in industries did not receive any rises for 9 to twelve years

Make up your mind Sue, as usual a muddled, contrary string of statements - The problem is with the Mayor and the CEO both must be urgently replaced with a statutory manager in order to bring stability and functionality to the management of Christchurch.
