Niwa is looking at cutting jobs

The Greens say job cuts at Niwa's Central Otago climate research centre will hurt New Zealand's international reputation and highlight the Government's lack of commitment to climate change science.

The centre at Lauder, between Alexandra and Ranfurly, is looking at cutting 2.8 equivalent full-time positions from its staff of 11 scientists, which has some in the scientific community up in arms.

It comes after staff numbers were cut from 16 during the last three years.

Green Party environment spokeswoman Eugenie Sage says the Government is "proposing crippling cuts" to the research centre.

"The plan to disinvest in a top climate science research centre, combined with the recent weakening of our Emissions Trading Scheme, reveals the Government's lack of commitment to international climate change science," she said.

"It also undermines the good reputation of New Zealand's scientific community."

New Zealand Association of Scientists past president James Renwick says the cuts will spell the end of Lauder's world-class climate measurement science programme.

Scientific capability of that quality took decades to develop but could be destroyed with the "flick of a bureaucrat's pen", he told Fairfax.

Niwa general manager of research Rob Murdoch says 2.8 fulltime equivalent staff positions will be cut as Niwa rearranges strategies within its atmospheric and climate research. A final decision is expected by the end of the month.

Rather than focusing on UV and health implications of the hole in the ozone layer, it wanted to look a the hole's influence on climate, he said.

As NIWA work is global, shouldn't it promotes itself globally and get funding from overseas? I think China would be delighted to contribute. NZ being a small cash strapped country should not bear the burden of climate research which benefits everybody. We have to be realistic. Even a cash rich country like Singapore don't fund such researches. The Greens is a party with poor economic sense.

This is Ok Greens, allow for the change in the research.Everything here needs researching. You just stick to uncovering the corruption of ACC, and convincing J Collins to accept your wonderful 100 day ACC Rehab Plan. Also find out what Shamrock Superannuation is really all about. Then you will reveal the corruption that has infiltrated this government. Kook after NZ by looking after the people first. Bless you

Good job. Time to face the reality that we've been scammed by the anthropogenic global warming gravy train & stop flushing more money down the toilet. Those who still think we should pay money for such a non problem with no empirical proof are more than welcome to make their own contribution. I wonder how much scientific effort will be put into AGW, & how many b.s. doomsday scenarios of submerged cities, hellfire & brimstone we'll be brainwashed with when there is no more access to the public purse. Not much I expect. Cut the lifeline to the scamsters and see how they get on without their noses in the public trough. NIWA can't even say what methods they use to substantiate their temperature adjustments, and disown their temperature records at the drop of a hat when asked. NIWA can kiss bye bye to the $$$$$$.
