One of the two teenagers accused of murdering Wellington journalist Phillip Cottrell will stay behind bars for another six weeks after a suggested bail address was rejected as unsuitable.

Nicho Waipuka, 19, has so far failed in his bids for bail, despite his co-accused, Manuel Robinson, 17, being granted bail before Christmas.

The youths were arrested after Mr Cottrell, 43, a Radio New Zealand journalist, was found bashed in a central Wellington street in December. He died in hospital the next day.

Waipuka applied for electronically monitored bail in Wellington District Court on Wednesday but the proposed address posed problems for the equipment, the New Zealand Herald reported.

An alternative address will be sought and Waipuka will appear again on March 28.
