The man charged with the murder of six-month-old Serenity Jay Scott has been denied bail.

Unemployed Hamilton man Mathew Ellery, 21, was arrested yesterday and charged with the baby’s murder in Ngaruawahia on April 26 last year.

He appeared in the Hamilton District Court this morning and has been remanded in custody.

Serenity died after being taken to Starship Hospital with critical injuries, after being found unresponsive in her Havelock Road home.

Police and medical staff believe her injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Serenity's mother Chelsea Scott, 21, and Ellery were taken to Hamilton Police Station for questioning yesterday, after which Ellery was charged.

Ellery is scheduled to reappear in court on February 10.

Scott has a daughter with Ellery, but the child was placed in Child, Youth and Family care shortly after her birth on January 6.

@ Grim: CYF and the Police did not do their jobs. They ignored neighbours reports of domestic violence. They ignored notifications from family and the community. They overlooked the red flags on this family. They get paid as organisations and as individuals , enormous sums of tax payer money to protect kids and support families, yet they collect their pay for having long morning teas. It is all to easy to collect up subsequent babies at the hospital and wait until an offender wants to unburden themselves with a confession. Where was the intervention during mothers 1st high risk red flag pregnancy? Where was the extra nurse visits and the hospital follow ups? Where were the mandatory parenting classes? Where were the teen mums support groups and counseling? That is what the red flag system is supposed to do. It is meant to kick in after the pregnancy test. It is meant to be enforced after the 1st domestic violence report. Abusers don't know any better and think they have a right to do it. Social workers and cops sign up for the job and get paid for it. That is the difference.

'GrimReaper' - regardless of what you think of her, the woman hasn't been found guilty by the law of doing any harm by her children, she lost her daughter, and you feel the need to call her a 'disgusting trollop' - ? Her partner's charged and accused of murdering her six month old girl, why does it surprise you that she'd no longer want to be with him? How is changing her relationship status on facebook 'advertising'?

Well done the Police and CYFS ... you are just fantastic for seeing this through..you do get a lot flack unfairly.. but the Team deserve all the thanks and community support. For the scum bag killer you are now showing your true colors..a phsycopath. Jail is the level playing field and you will truely meet your worst nightmare there. It will be intgeresting to see if your real past will come to the meadia's attention..this i'm sure is not the first crime..and the mother..what a discusting trollop..how do you read that the first thing she does is too advertise she's single.."Open wide ..come and get it boys" says the black widow ...all that is left will soon belong to the Grim Reaper..
