A bronze medal at the Olympics makes you a hero, whereas a third place finish at golf earns you a choker label.

That's the great thing about the Games, according to Greg Norman.

The former world No.1 golfer spoke in London about his excitement that, after more than a century, golf will again feature in the Olympics at Rio de Janeiro 2016.

"What I love about the Olympics more than golf or any other sport is when you finish and get a bronze medal in the Olympics you're a hero. If you finish third at a major championship, you're a choker in golf," said 57-year-old Norman.

The comment was particularly pertinent for two-time major champion Norman who during his career recorded a series of famous near-misses in the big ones.

A proponent for decades for the sport to return to the Games - after last featuring in the official program in 1904 - Norman said it will boost the global profile of golf.

Now strictly a part-time tournament player, Norman's chance to become an Olympian has almost certainly slipped by, but that didn't stop him dreaming about it.

"I would be delighted to play," he said.

"I would probably give my right arm to go out and play for my country ... but I don't see myself personally being there to be able to play.

"But believe me, my mind and my spirit and my heart wish I was walking onto that tee to hit that first tee shot representing my country."

Visiting London for the Olympics, Norman has watched friend Lleyton Hewitt win his first round Olympic match and has also attended some swimming events at the Olympic aquatic centre.
