By Lloyd Burr

The Government has poured cold water on the Law Commission’s recommendation to conduct clinical trials for the medicinal use of cannabis.

Associate Minister of Health Peter Dunne made the ruling today when he announced the Government would be overhauling and replacing the 40-year-old Misuse of Drugs Act.

Mr Dunne said “among the more controversial Law Commission recommendations in its May report was that clinical trials be conducted into the medical use of leaf cannabis”.

“We are not going with that recommendation,” he said.

“It is the Government’s view that it is not its role to initiate clinical trials on cannabis leaf or any other product or substance.

“If the active ingredient of cannabis is seen as essential or beneficial for pain relief there are already pharmaceutical forms of it available that provide measured doses and quality control,” Mr Dunne said.

The Law Commission report, Controlling and Regulating Drugs: a Review of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975, was delivered in May and the Government has since been considering its findings and recommendations.

Mr Dunne says the Government is still working on policy from the report’s 144 recommendations and will present proposals to Parliament later in the year.

Wow. How dumb are the comments here? They look like they come straight from the Norml website. Do you really think Dunne is single-handedly controlling the cannabis issue? Greens, Maori Party, Mana, many Labour, most Act and some National MPs support decriminalisation and yet do not push the issue. Why? Because it would be politically unpopular. As ALCP shows, a pro-cannabis stance doesn't gain you votes; it will only lose votes. If you want change on these issues don't target Dunne - he's one vote - target the MPs who are in favour of a law change and get them to speak up.

Dunne will be back in November with ease, but he still won't be the boogey man you lot wish he was.

MSG To The Government - The Public Are Aware That You Have Been Purposely Deceiving Us For 70 Years! Dear Public Servants, the Government New zealand, I write to inform you that we, the public of NZ, are growing ever more aware of the fact that successive governments have been purposely deceiving us regarding the prohibition of cannabis for approximately 70 years. We are aware of the racist, unethical, immoral, unjust, unlawful and wholly discriminate propaganda that revolves around the entire issue of the state's attempt to hood-wink society. Almost every conceivable prejudice has been thrown at the issue, no matter how absurd, in an attempt for the state to protect the lie. Such illogical maintenance of the lie continues to this day and we, your electorate, are fully aware of your futile attempts to keep your necks above the waters of public knowledge. It is a dangerous situation to have the electorate over-take it's government in this manner. The Internet is alive with overwhelming evidence to counter each and every one of the state's unsubstantiated claims against cannabis. Such evidence has also been provided by your electorate here on this website and under this topic. The "free" citizen is easily able to research evidence that will acknowledge that, indeed, they are trusting an untrustworthy government. We, the people and your electorate, demand that you immediately cease lying to us and begin a process of reconciliation with your electorate so that we may once again be able to trust the people that we elect. We demand an apology and an admission of complicity in the corrupt deceit of society. We also demand an immediate repeal of cannabis prohibition and it's full legalisation. An open lie cannot be upheld! The State has been found out! WE KNOW!!! Continuation of such deceit of the public in the face of overwhelming and publicly accessible evidence to the contrary will simply result in an ever diminishing respect, confidence and trust of the state by the electorate. The lie simply cannot be maintained. Yours sincerely, Rationalist. Why the contribution is important This is possibly one of the single most important Idea's contained on this site. Whether you are a cannabis user or not, every member of the public should be extremely concerned and angered by the corrupt lies deceit and propaganda of the state regarding cannabis prohibition. Why? Well it is the very simplest concept of democracy, that of implicit trust in our public servants. If we are unable to trust them to not profoundly deceive us on a yearly basis for almost a century regarding cannabis then how on Earth are we to trust them on more serious issues such as state security, economy, prisons, criminal legislation and (most importantly) the PROTECTION OF OUR FREEDOM? Like it or not, the issue of cannabis prohibition and the fight for legalisation, liberty, truth and justice effects every walk of life for if the government see that open faced deceit works as a policy of state control then we are all in serious trouble. It is not cannabis legalisation that is the core of the fight against prohibition but rather it is our very freedom, the sanctity of liberty, justice and our beloved democracy that we are fighting to maintain.

Peter Dunne or is it John, comes across as a very old man. Surely the Labour branches that first put him into parliament were for legalisation of an awesome range of drugs- certainly including marijuana. Dunne has been busy criminalising all sorts of things such as Chronic, Party drugs and all sorts of herbs, vitamins probably as well. Surely people should be able to make their own choices. Hope for the human race will come when virtually any drug, legal or illegal or pharmacutical or psych drug can just be brought off the shelf of a chemist by anyone over 18. O'h I just remembered we've made every effective cold cure such as coldrex a controlled drug which requires a perscription. Soon a doctors visit will be required to allow you to leave the house. Surely parliament should be about minimising the amount of legislation and acts on the books. Dunne and stephen Joyce must rank as the worst paternalists in the house. Surely people should be allowed to live, Surely the bars should be licensed to be open 24 hours. Surely if Geoffery Palmer or is it Godfrey Palmer is so concerned about booze in poor suburbs should go and live in Cannon's creek if he cares about the people their. Surely most psychiatrists advocate the legalisation of party drugs, esctasy and pot so why are Dunne and Doug Selman so keen to criminalise alcohol and most drugs. People will make much better choices of how to medicate and pleasure themselves alone or together than any specialist, parliamentarian or policemen. Look if people in Remuera or Karori are really so stupid to vote for Bank's or Dunne they really should be stripped of the vote. Clearly a much mor concerted deregulation of the professions is required to break the power of these people.

Happily, Ohariu Belmont is a marginal electorate and Labour's Charles Chauvel could take the seat if there's enough tactical voting within it. I suggest that any (justifiably) angry pro-reform voters who live in that electorate target Dunne come November.

How heartless is Dunne. I live with chronic intractable pain, I also suffer PTSD,nausea, fatigue, ibs. I suffer every day my quality of life is mostly sh*t. To deny sick and dying people reflief is a human rights issue. How can he say that sellers of Kronic and the like will have to prove they r safe. What about alcohol. Both the NZMA - NZ medical association, and the law com what this medicine to be available to patients. This is an issue that should be between Drs and patients not politicians and police.

I'm really sick of this guy getting full control over this subject, to think he only gets 20,000 votes to hold this position yet thinks he has the mandate to do as he does. The Law Commission's review of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 was conducted using experts in the feild and their recommendations were to allow medical use of cannabis yet Dunne produces an excuse that something is already available, the issue here is that it simply isn't true, the drug he refers to is Sativex which is nearly impossible to obtain and costs more than anybody can afford, on top of this it needs his say before anybody can access it! The distributor of Sativex in this country has pulled out due to lack of sales too! It's time for honest debate on this subject and it shouldn't be left to this has been to decide what is best for us, we already know that currently available medicines don't work for us and why we turned to cannabis in the first place, because Dunne has made Sativex unobtainable means we will continue using the real thing and be treated as criminals for doing so. We need a change of who controls this subject in govt, this person is not suitable for the job, I mean think about it, we are sick and disabled people trying to find solutions to our problems where current solutions are not working and for that this guy is more willing to give us convictions and treat us as criminals that helping to provide a solution. Is that fair that a politician should be allowed to walk over the sick and disabled? He should be locked up, not congratulated....
