Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee has just returned from meetings in Europe where he has been talking to top re-insurers in London and Monte Carlo.

The immediate question is whether they will be able to offer re-insurance for the Canterbury earthquake region.

But there are also questions about coverage for other areas, like Wellington, our most earthquake-prone city.

Gerry Brownlee joins The Nation from Wellington.

That's what's wrong, they garranteed promises they cannot keep and now an upset among the quarkes victims of Christchurch.. Christchurch is the main issue here and not Wellington.. They should have left Mayor Parker of Christchurch to deal with the situation, and those insuarance companies better bloody pay-up..

I agree with jj - who do you believe. Perhaps a phone call to Anna Bligh (Queensland) might work as she called a meeting of the insurers in Qld and ensured that they paid out after the floods. Most of our insurers in NZ are from OZ, so Gerry, a quick trip across the Tasman might get results.

Sounds like Gerry was just looking for an excusse to holiday in the states for a few days. @Just saying, it will depend on how close to an election the earthquake is for us here in Wellington. We know we are overdue for a big one and we are waiting on it, but just like Christchurch we expect little to nothing from a National Government in response. I guess if they could privatise National disasters or sell them off as state assets I would expect a little more interest out of self interested right wing politicians and their sleazy supporters.

So why not do what you are actually paid to do Gerry, sack Ian Simpson, and bring in genuine accountability to the Earthquake Recovery, rather than some over paid cronies. Then when you have done with that, stand aside yourself for someone who might actually give a damn. Of course to hold the EQC accountable, the government would have to acknowledge that they were advised by the previous CEO that the EQC would in all likelihood fail in a major event, but chose to manage the risk . . . For anyone thinking of voting National in the forthcoming election, consider the fact that while it is Christchurch being stuffed at present, when it is Wellington or Auckland's turn this will be the best response you will get - those of us in Christchurch living with this on a day to day basis wish you the best of luck.
