Wellington commuters are set to face more chaos this evening as the standoff continues over the bus drivers' pay dispute.

The lockout has caused huge disruptions throughout Wellington this morning.

NZ Bus which runs the GO Wellington service says that the lockout will end when they get an assurance from the bus drivers union that they will go back to the negotiations table and that there will be no  further strike action.

But the union says that they won’t negotiate until the lockout ends.

While the lockout is underway bus drivers aren’t being paid but they say they won’t back down.

“Twelve dollars seventy two, how are you meant to feed children on that,” one driver asked.

“I’m prepared to stay out here as long as I have to,” she said.

There were large traffic delays particularly on the fringe of Wellington this morning.

But not everyone is complaining. Some school children spoken to by 3 News said it was a good excuse to be late for class.

Many workers chose to walk this morning or to work from home.
