Frucor has removed the Running of the Bulls prize from the Pepsi Max “Bromitment” competition after public outrage over the event.

The competition, targeted at Kiwi males, offers consumers the chance to win “an epic adventure”, Frucor says. One of the original prize options was a trip to Spain to participate in the Running of the Bulls.

Dozens of people posted complaints on the company’s Facebook page, saying the company should not be promoting the event, which they say condones cruelty to animals.

One commenter said, “Shame on you, Pepsi, for supporting such a disgusting so-called sport like Running of the Bulls”.

In a press release this afternoon, Frucor said they “take social responsibility seriously” and would be removing the prize.

“We now recognise that a proportion of our target market is offended by this type of activity, which they perceive as cruel to animals,” the release said.

“For this we wholeheartedly apologise. Frucor and Pepsi in no way support animal cruelty.”

Hay, I was there for the whole thing. I think you forgot to mention that the dozens of people that posted on the page were from all over the world, including America, Canada, and Australia. So it isn't much of a public outcry as it is a couple people from a couple animal rights groups posting the same thing over and over. I also fail to understand how Pepsi New Zealand's target market includes people that live in other countries. Ahh well, once again the vocal minority win over the silent majority.

Thank you for changing your stance and not supporting animal cruelty. This is greatly appreciated! I will resume purchasing of Pepsi and PepsiCo products immediately.
