Frucor has removed the Running of the Bulls prize from the Pepsi Max “Bromitment” competition after public outrage over the event.
The competition, targeted at Kiwi males, offers consumers the chance to win “an epic adventure”, Frucor says. One of the original prize options was a trip to Spain to participate in the Running of the Bulls.
Dozens of people posted complaints on the company’s Facebook page, saying the company should not be promoting the event, which they say condones cruelty to animals.
One commenter said, “Shame on you, Pepsi, for supporting such a disgusting so-called sport like Running of the Bulls”.
In a press release this afternoon, Frucor said they “take social responsibility seriously” and would be removing the prize.
“We now recognise that a proportion of our target market is offended by this type of activity, which they perceive as cruel to animals,” the release said.
“For this we wholeheartedly apologise. Frucor and Pepsi in no way support animal cruelty.”
