Nominations for the Kiwibank New Zealand of the Year Awards will be launched at a Wellington event tonight, hosted by former Prime Minister Jim Bolger.
The Wellington waterfront affair will be followed by a community event in Hagley Park tomorrow, which will open the South Island call for nominations.
Those behind the awards, sponsored by Kiwibank, are on the lookout for Kiwis who offer outstanding service, achievement and contribution to New Zealand. Individuals, organisations and community groups from all walks of life will be considered in this year’s nominations.
Categories include the title award as well as the senior and young New Zealander of the Year and community of the year. 250 people in up to 15 regions will also be dubbed local heroes.
Mr Bolger says the awards aim to recognise “deeds and efforts [which] will inspire and encourage others who seek to do good in society”.
“[It’s for] special groups and individuals who in their own unique way have made a difference,” says Mr Bolger.
Last year’s winner was Sir Paul Callaghan of Wellington, a world leading scientist in nanotechnology and magnetic resonance. He also feels passionately about the ‘brain drain’ theory, where New Zealand’s educated young move overseas in search for better opportunities.
Nominations will run until October 14 and judging will take place in December, with the award ceremony taking place in February 2012.
