55 percent of pandas are sick of the Rugby World Cup

55 percent of pandas are sick of the Rugby World Cup

Daily distractions for sufferers of World Cup fatigue, from Ally Mullord.

Rugby World Cup 2011 has begun, and a survey conducted last week by the Tourism Industry Association says 55 percent of people surveyed were already sick of the World Cup.

An equally scientific survey of the newsroom carried out by me and excluding the clearly biased sports department, yielded similar results: so throughout the month, to counter the flood of constant sport, I am building a small but tenacious dam of Not Rugby.

Today, allow me to present three photo blogs: one design, one humour and one panda, but all more visually appealing than the You-Know-What.

Things Organised Neatly

This photo blog is just like it says on the tin – pictures of things, organised neatly. The things range from the mundane (pencils, handbags, food) to the unexpected (power tools) to the completely mental (alphabet soup, an entire car disassembled).

Somehow it is all very soothing – something site founder and curator Austin Radcliffe puts down to the difference between art and life, in an interview with Imprint:

“People enjoy my site because our world is chaotic. My blog is not.”

Catalog Living

Catalog Living is a humour site which chronicles the adventures of Elaine and Gary, a sometimes-happy couple who live inside the photographs in catalogues.

It sounds ridiculous, but it works – creator Molly Erdman selects a particularly ridiculous photograph from a homewares catalogue (and there is a never-ending supply), gives it a hilarious and snarky caption, and presents a new development in the lives of Gary and Elaine.

Downside: this will completely ruin the Farmers catalogue for you.

Panda Loves to Party

Just because pandas are pandas doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy a party just as much as the rest of us. This photo blog aims to prove that by collecting photos from panda parties, for your viewing pleasure. I had no idea there were so many!

At any given time, there is at least one partying panda somewhere in the world, and this blog will have a photo of him.

It’s kind of like the society pages. For pandas.
