'Nude Blacks' call for daring opponents

By Dave Gooselink

An impressive winning streak seems to be putting off naked challengers in Dunedin, as the Nude Blacks rugby team prepares for their first game of the season this Saturday.

The afternoon match between the Nude Blacks and the Springbox is the unofficial curtain-raiser for Saturday night's test match at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

And while the mainly student-based squad has been in training for months, their opponents are still looking for a few more "local South Africans" to join their team.

Match organiser, Ralph Davies of Headfirst Travel, wants to hear from any fresh talent who "have the balls to challenge the domination of the Nude Blacks".

The world-famous team were convincing winners of last year's Nude World Cup, losing just one of their four games in Dunedin, to the highly rated Spanish Conquistadors women's rugby team.

Meanwhile the players are planning to interrupt their gruelling training schedule on Wednesday night, to host the inaugural Nude Black Charity Dinner.

Diners will be treated to a range of Dunedin culinary favourites, with the evening aimed at raising money for 6-year-old Jessica Hermansen, who is battling leukaemia in Starship Hospital.

The Grabaseat Nude Blacks will reveal their new team strip on the night, which will also feature rowing races between Olympian Fiona Bourke, Jessica's uncle Duncan, and team players.

Limited tickets are still available for Wednesday night's Charity Dinner.
