Wanaka may have a nude tramper and a flasher on its hands after several reports of men exposing themselves.

Last month there were reports of a naked tramper, described as in his 40s, with a backpack, cap and shoes on the Mt Iron and Outlet walking tracks near the Central Otago town.

Then, on Saturday morning, at Mt Iron, a naked tramper was again reported on the track, ducking into bushes. This was followed by a similar report on Monday morning.

He was described as a tall Caucasian in his 30s, of average build, with short hair and a beard. This time he was carrying his clothes.

The man had not done anything indecent when he was seen but the behaviour was still concerning, Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell told NZ Newswire.

"He does seem to make himself known to females rather than males ... he appears to be an exhibitionist rather than a naturist."

Sen Sgt Grindell said that while the man had exposed all of himself to the walkers, they could not describe him with any great detail.

"People must be embarrassed and look away. Whether they get such a shock and look away, there hasn't been a lot of detailed description."

In a more sinister incident, on Monday night a man, described as being in his 30s and wearing a button-up flannel shirt and dark trousers, approached a woman in the centre of the town with his penis out and made sexual suggestions.

Sen Sgt Grindell said the incidents were quite different but he could not rule out the same man being involved.

Police were keen to hear with anyone who had information on the incidents.

What the heck is going on in New Zealand? Just lately, there seem to have been lots of stories of New Zealanders indulging in exhibitionism - naked rugby games, naked cyclists and so on. What is going through people's heads when they think it's acceptable to expose your genitalia to strangers? I live in Scandinavia and, in spite of the reputation for being "uninhibited", nothing like that ever happens here, thankfully. I was contemplating a trip to NZ over Christmas to visit my daughter, but if this sort of thing is happening, I don't think I'll bother.

I was going to make a typical , offender was a bushy haired stranger comment... but it just sounds so very wrong in this context.... someone needs to give him a few identifying marks with the sharp end of a tramping pole

So what was newsworthy about this? The fact he was nude or the fact someone noticed?
