New Zealanders believe Asians face more discrimination than any other race.

That is prompting the Race Relations Commissioner to call for action, such as having more Asians on television and on school boards .

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres says some of the reasons Asians face challenges are historic.

“By and large they are the most recent, significant group of migrant and they have settled fairly largely in Auckland. There are some historical routes of discrimination, both against Chinese and Indian in New Zealand,” said Mr de Bres.

For the fifth year running, three quarters of respondents in a survey for the Race Relations Commission believe Asians face most prejudice.

Only asian men are being discriminated against, everywhere I go I see at least 1-2 pakeha hanging out with an asian woman (guess either married or in a relationship), obviously pakeha men are not discriminating against asian women.

I am not surprised that these cultures are discriminated against. I am a kiwi residing in China and never seen a culture so different to New Zealanders. In my experience China for example is a communist culture with the ultimate cut throat form of capitalism. Common courtesy doesn't exist amongst their fellow people and warmth and friendliness has a rare place in this culture. Love and caring is only directed towards their family. This is not just a generalisation, this is the opinion of most expats and westernised chinese residing in China. Other parts of asia have a different vibe. I believe New Zealanders have a warped view of china and their culture of recent generations. For example the Two year old girl named Yueyue run over in Foshan city, Guandong last year as more than a dozen people walk or drive past the critically injured girl. New Zealanders I urge you go live in China before you have an opinion of chinese culture. Being Politically correct in this situation is laughable.

Maybe it is because they speak poor English, keep within their own communities and do little to asimilate. They have to take some blame on their own shoulders - and positive discrimination will just cause problems.

I find it hard to believe that such a prejudice exists here. I employ over 20 who are Indian, Fijian Indian, Chinese, Philippine etc, and find them all industrious and very trustworthy. I have found their expectations are that if they work hard and do their best and also show due respect, all that is not lost upon me and in return I remunerate them all accordingly and they are all happy, several being with me over 20 years and most at least 6 to 15 years.

I think the older generation in general is a little bit more racist. This is probably becasue they did not grow up with the differnt types of cultures around them. But this does not mean it gives the right to be racist.

Many of those who are close minded, or feel like they are superior to Asians, will be surprised at how developed, intellectual and creative Asian people are if they get a chance to visit countries such as, South Korea, Japan etc.

Good luck with that Joris. Freedom from racism is as elusive as worldwide peace. It's obvious that there is a groundswell in the belief that we are being taken over by Asians. Just look at the uproar over the Crafar farm sale to Chinese. Would Australians have copped the same grief? Constantly showing TV programs depicting Asians trying to bring banned food and illegal medicines into the country don't help their image. de Bres should take a look at this area. If Joris de Bres ever gets a performance bonus it can't be based on achievement he has the most unachievable task going.
