Occupy Dunedin protesters have packed it in after 66 days in the city's Octagon.

The group were ending the occupation for the Christmas period, but it's not clear if they will return afterwards.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull welcomed their departure.

"It's better late than never," Mr Cull told NZ Newswire.

"I would have preferred they went some time ago, but it's good that they've gone now, and it's good that they've gone without the need for conflict.

"I suspect that from the point of view of the occupiers, they realised that it might not have been that comfortable there in the middle of the festive season."

The protest began on October 15 with more than 100 activists, who refused to leave despite Dunedin City Council issuing a trespass notice on November 1.

Police refused to enforce the trespass notice.

Small numbers of protesters also remain in Auckland's Aotea Square and Wellington's Civic Square, while the Auckland District Court considers whether Auckland Council can enforce a trespass notice on occupiers.

The protests have been part of the global Occupy movement, which began on New York's Wall Street in September.
