Still from One Day

Still from One Day

By Kate Rodger

One Day is a bestselling book beloved by many, and its big screen re-telling has been highly anticipated.

Based in Britain, it's the story of friends and sometime lovers Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess), told over 20 years, as we catch up with them for one day a year.

They meet at the end of university, both very different people, who live very different lives. Their friendship goes through many an up and down over the years, keeping the viewer guessing on the ‘will they or won't they’ front.

It's Hathaway's much-maligned misfire with her British accent here which really does jar, a source of unintentional comedy mostly.

But it was more the lack of chemistry between the two leads which really sucked the life from the screen, and the unremarkable way their story was tied together.

Overall, One Day was an awkward, almost turgid and rather charmless cinematic experience.

Two stars.
