One person is dead following a police chase south of Auckland this afternoon.

Police spotted the stolen Nissan south of Pukekohe near Tuakau Road - but abandoned the search after several minutes.

Thirty seconds later the fleeing vehicle collided with a Ford Falcon after failing to stop at the intersection of Patumahoe and Waiuku roads.

Counties Manukau Communications Manager Natalie Swart says a second person may have run from the crash site:

“Following our information from a member of the public who claims to have seen a second person flee the vehicle on foot after the crash, Serious Crash Investigation unit from Counties Manukau is at the scene of the crash now and inquiries are continuing as to the second occupant of that fleeing vehicle,” she says.

The woman driver of the Ford is shaken but unharmed.

in response to tania. did you even read the comments?! none of them mentioned the family let alone saying anything nasty about them. The mum might be dealing with hell but hey don't even bother to spare a thought for the countless people and their grieving families who fall victim to an increasing disregard for human life like this. This sort of thing seems to happen every week and still the justice system continues to give slaps on the hands to people who don't give a toss about anyone else around them. Wouldn't you be singing a different tune if you had a son or daughter being scraped of the road or their windscreen after being taken out by some inconsiderate idiot (heavily censored).

Brett you are absolutely right, however you are talking about low lives that do not respect anything at all in this world so they won't give a rat's bum for a police car with lights on. If it was me I would shoot their tyres right away.

National Radio reports that the police called off the chase "moments" before the crash which like the rhythm method of birth control takes "perfect timing".

This is a very dangerous intersection cars travelling on the main road are at risk here from people unfamiliar with this intersection there has been several potentially bad collisions there should be vibration strips put on the road like has been done on the roundabout on porchester road papakura

Thank god that the driver of the Ford is ok! As far as i'm concerned the driver of the fleeing vehicle is the only one who should be found accountable and he paid the ultimate price.

It's really simple... when the Police activate their lights... pull over!
