One dead after SH1 vehicle fire

Wednesday 05 Dec 2012 11:19a.m.

One dead after SH1 vehicle fire

A person has been found dead inside a burning vehicle on State Highway 1 north of Taupo.

The fire service received calls about smoke in the Ohakuri area just before 10am on Wednesday.

A northern fire communications spokeswoman says when crews arrived at the scene they found a four-wheel drive ablaze.

One person was found dead inside.

The vehicle was not involved in a crash, the spokeswoman said.

Police are at the scene.

Police say they expect the scene examination to take several hours. A post-mortem will be held to determine the cause of death.

Police have not yet identified the deceased and say it is too early to say whether the death is suspicious.

On Sunday, the body of Christchurch car salesman Shane Malcolm Bell was found inside a burnt-out car in North Canterbury.

Police are treating Mr Bell's death as suspicious.
