A motorcyclist is dead after the bike crossed the centre line and collided with a car near Whitiroa.

Waikato police say there are delays on the Waihi Whangamata Rd heading towards the Coromandel as a result of the crash which happened about 2pm.

The two occupants of the car involved in the crash were uninjured.

Waihi police sergeant Dave Litton says emergency services attended the scene about 5km north-east of Whitiroa and the Serious Crash Unit is now investigating the incident.

He says the motorcyclist, 48, had been riding with a friend and the pair were travelling from Athenree to Whangamata.

“It appears a motorcyclist had been riding north on SH25 towards Whangamata when he has lost control on a moderate left hand bend,” Mr Litton says.

“Crossing the centre line the motorcyclist has collided with an oncoming Toyota Surf utility and suffered fatal injuries.”

Mr Litton says he expects SH25 to be closed until about 5.30pm or 6pm and advises motorists to prepare for delays.

“We would recommend motorists use SH25A between Kopu and Hikuai and rejoin SH25 from there.”

Police are currently working to advise the next of kin about the incident.
