A young man who died in a motocross collision had been at a party in North Canterbury before he and another man decided to go for a ride, police say.
Craig Gordon Pickering, 21, died after the head-on collision on Cascade Rd, Balmoral in North Canterbury about 9:45pm yesterday.
The other rider, a 20-year-old man, suffered serious injuries.
He remains in intensive care today, but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening, police say.
It appeared both men had been at a party at a nearby property, before deciding to go for a ride on the motocross bikes, Constable Phil Woods of Culverden police says.
Neither man was wearing a helmet, the motorcycles did not have lights and the gravel road is not lit.
The bikes appear to have collided at speed then continued on for about 50 metres before stopping, Const Woods said.
Alcohol has not been ruled out as a contributing factor.
Mr Pickering was a dairy farmer from Balmoral.
Both men were flown to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter, but Mr Pickering died on the way.
