One person is dead and two others have been seriously injured after two crashes in Auckland overnight.

A passenger died after being thrown from the front seat of a car and impaled on a fence on Ngapipi Road in Orakei around 2am.

Police are still looking for the driver of the vehicle, who fled after the crash.

Part of Ngapipi Road was closed overnight while police attended the crash. The road has since reopened this morning.

Earlier in the night two people were taken to hospital in a critical condition after their car crashed into trees on Tamaki drive, just 1km from the Ngapipi road crash.
