A huge factory fire in an industrial area of Auckland has been put out.

A Fire Service spokesman said it was unlikely the fire, which started about 11am at a factory on Miami Parade in Onehunga, would be treated as suspicious.

Five people suffered minor injuries after the 100m by 50m factory, which is owned by Textile Products Ltd and stores insulation material, caught fire.

Fire Northern Communications spokesman Scott Osmond told NZ Newswire the factory was no longer on fire.

Firefighters from up to 15 fire appliances fought the blaze.

Both the factory and surrounding businesses had been evacuated. No other buildings were damaged by the blaze.

A woman who worked nearby on Edinburgh St said the fire was huge when she first saw it just after 11am.

"There was very heavy black smoke and flames that were reaching one or two stories high," the woman, who did not want to be named, told NZ Newswire.

Sharon Xu, 28, who works about 50 metres from the blaze on Miami Parade, said she felt frightened after seeing the blaze through her office window.

"There was plenty of smoke going into the sky and a big fire," she told NZ Newswire.

Mr Osmond said although it was not yet known how the fire was started it was not thought to be suspicious.

People near the fire on Monday morning told NZ Newswire they could see flames reaching "one or two storeys high" and black smoke billowing from the factory.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire by a person inside the factory and an alarm on the third floor was also triggered.

According to the website of Textile Products Ltd, the company has 25 staff working in a 3345 sq m factory space.
