Regardless of whether you love him or hate him, it's hard not to respect SBW.
It’s fair to call him the ultimate professional. But, deep down he needs as much reassuring as the next bloke.
In fact, Sonny Bill Williams just wants to be one of the boys - something that was fairly evident in his emotional performance at today’s press conference.
Sure, he gets the special treatment. Especially from the NZRU. Mind you clearly there has been an about face in regard to the new Rugby Championship.
Steve Hansen has been adamant he would pick Williams - even if he was heading to Japan. Looks like those plans are shagged.
Japan of course will be an absolute doddle. There is an unwritten rule that overseas players look out for each other. But the grudge mentality that is rugby league will present Williams with some challenges he didn't face during his time dabbling in Rugby union.
He'll be targeted that's for sure. Not that that will worry SBW. He's clearly up for the challenge. While they used to call him ‘Chalky’ because he'd break all the time you get the feeling those days are long gone.
The person he will miss the most is Wayne Smith. Smith, one of the best in and out of the game, has given SBW the kind of support money can't buy.
The only lingering doubt in all this is the question of when is a handshake more binding than an actual contract? Go figure.
But in saying that, it's hard not to wish him all the best.
