Minister of Land Information Maurice Williamson says Kiwis who oppose foreign land ownership are racists.
Businessday.co.nz reports Mr Williamson spoke at a business conference yesterday, and said New Zealanders' attitudes are linked to the ethnicity of the buyer.
"The number of New Zealanders who don't like the idea of overseas investment and think it's really a bad thing, really sort of frightens me," said Mr Williamson, "and it's really amazing that some of them have actually got Pommy accents."
Prime Minister John Key rejected this view, last month saying opposition to the sale of the Crafar farms to Natural Dairy was not based on the company's Chinese background.
Mr Williamson however disagrees.
"If you look different you're a foreigner, but if you come from the other side of the world, from Scotland, then you're not," he told the conference.
Mr Williamson says that foreign investment in New Zealand is vital.
