Staff at Orana Wildlife Park are dealing with a sad loss.

In the midst of all the miracle escapes and tales of survival in the Canterbury earthquake, the park had the only known fatality.

Girdo, a 10-year-old black and white lemur, got such a fright he leapt into the moat surrounding his enclosure and drowned.

Another four lemurs came through the quake safely.
