The man rendered a paraplegic after he was shot by police in Hawke's Bay is denying a raft of charges against him.

David Taite, 48, had name suppression lifted when he appeared in Christchurch District Court today.

He made his first court appearance in a wheelchair and said he would plead not guilty to all charges against him, the Christchurch Court News website reported.

He is in Christchurch's Burwood Hospital spinal unit after he was shot once in the torso by a police officer at Otane, 73km southwest of Hastings, in October last year. He had allegedly threatened to kill two police officers and presented a whisky bottle which they thought was a firearm.

Police also allege he took a car in Dannevirke, drove dangerously in Hastings, entered a house and took a car in Waipawa, and entered a building in Otane.

Taite also faces charges of assault on a woman and intimidation from 2004-05.

He was remanded to next appear in Dannevirke District Court on March 30.
