The Prime Minister has hit out at Labour MPs grilling him about the Pike River families' campaign to re-enter the sealed mine.

John Key says the Government will write to Bernie Monk and the other families, explaining why it doesn't support their plan to enter the drift and recover the bodies of the 29 men who died there.

Labour's Damien O'Connor pressed Mr Key to reveal his reasons, which prompted an outburst from Mr Key.

“All of the advice we have received is that it is a very very substantial risk. The member’s actually doing what’s right for the health of people. If that member wants to kill people going in the mine, he should carry on that way.”

The outburst was met with calls of “order” from the Speaker.

Mr Key told Parliament he would "sleep very peacefully tonight" with the commitments he made.

Perhaps this pm should learn to keep his mouth shut and not promise what he cannot deliver. I watched his promise of getting them out at any cost and was disgusted at the time as it all appeared to be in the name of press coverage.

Sadly, many kiwis don't have the luxury of sleeping peacefully at night because of the worries and uncertainties this govt has thrust upon them. NZ might be a better place if Key spent a bit more time thinking about the good of NZers instead of lying in bed sleeping peacefully.

If Key allowed 'rescuers' in...and there was trouble, problems/deaths..can we assume the opposition would agree that he 'did the right thing'?...like hell they would...stick to your guns Key, if Labour/Greens win in 2014, let them do it...and explain why they can't/wont!...and hansard/TV footage will show them as hypocrits!

the prime minister is under pressure especially with new allegations today that his friend was ceo of pacific shipping and had shares in the shipping company in direct comp with pacific and it is believed john key had the same shares bought by advice from the ceo who had a connflict of interest along woiyh mc cully who gave the ceo the job when he was a personal friend of mr mc cully for more that 40 years. this is very murky. samantha
