National Party president Peter Goodfellow announce the list today

National has announced its party list of candidates who will fight the election in just under three months time.

And if national wins, there'll be a few new names in parliament, with the aim of diversifying the look of the party.

Dr Jian Yang has spent 17 years studying politics but after the election he will walk out of his university office and in to Parliament as a fully fledged first term MP.

“I feel it’s a great privilege and it’s a great opportunity for me to serve the Chinese community,” says Dr Yang.

Yang's cultural credentials are important to National.

He replaces disgraced former cabinet minister Pansy Wong as National's connection to the Asian community.

“There is a big gap between the National Party and the Chinese community and there is a demand there for someone from the Chinese community to fill that gap.”

So Dr Yang becomes the highest ranked National Party newcomer, a complete outsider slides in at 36.

Another highly placed new face is Alfred Ngaro, a former pastor of Cook Islands descent who last year failed to get elected on to the Auckland supercity council.

His entrance into national politics is much softer with a safe list place at 37.

“Politics is in families, politics is in communities, it happens all over the place so I’m ready for the opportunity I think,” says Mr Ngaro.

Where there are winners there must be losers.

Minister of Twitter Tau Henare drops 14 places to 40, coming in after rank outsiders Yang and Ngaro.

National Party president Peter Goodfellow says he understands “Tau is happy with that position”.

Which was not quite how Mr Henare described it – he is clearly disappointed.
