He has already pledged more than $1 million towards the growth and development of hockey in New Zealand, but today businessman and philanthropist Owen Glenn went quite a bit further.

He is bankrolling the 2011 Men’s Hockey Champions trophy tournament.

It was supposed to be held in Delhi in December, but India was deemed too unsafe by the International Hockey Federation. Last week, they withdrew the country’s hosting rights.

So Auckland is the new host of seven of the world’s best hockey teams, plus New Zealand, playing here in a very major sporting follow-up to the Rugby World Cup.

Good on Mr Glenn. He is a legend. It is his money after all and who are others to say how he should spend it? I play hockey, as do my family and have enjoyed being involved at various levels in the game for many years, so do appreciate the value of this tournament to the game. Thank you Mr Glenn.

Maybe he is just doing something out of good will... just like how he has contributed millions of dollars as well as dedicating his own time and effort into the welfare of disadvantaged people all over the globe through he foundation that he has built. To suggest that Mr Glenn wants to "buy respect" from people of a supposed weak character contrasts with everything that his charity stands for. Maybe you should do some research before accusing people of such acts; you may be surprised that not all wealthy people have to pay money in order to gain respect.
