Severe weather thrashed the North Island today with the Karangahake Gorge near Paeroa rising more than three metres.
The road through the gorge was closed this morning and State Highway 2 through Athenree Gorge was closed this afternoon.

The video shows the waterfall bellowing with murky flood water.
Metservice says up to 120mm of rain could fall in the western Bay of Plenty, and up to 140mm in Gisborne.
