The owners of a dog that badly bit a three-year-old Ashburton boy in the throat will not be prosecuted.

The boy remains in a critical but stable condition in Christchurch Hospital, a day after he was bitten by a relative's dog.

The council impounded the animal and it was put down yesterday afternoon at the request of its owners.

The dog, a Doberman Staffordshire bull terrier cross, was microchipped and had been registered since 2006 without incident.
