Ketetahi Hut's water tanks were smashed by debris

Photos from the Tongariro Crossing tramping track have been released and show the damage caused by flying volcanic debris.

The Ketetahi hut suffered extensive damage to both its interior and exterior, with rocks penetrating the roof and smashing outdoor amenities.

Boulders spewed out by Monday night’s eruption also damaged the tracks, wiping out some sections.

Ash covered parts of the track, creating a spectacular sight.

Sad to see the damage! It was I who selected the hut site in 1966 (approved by John Mazey). Great to think that some thousands of visitors have enjoyed the facilities over the last 46 years and the view of course which is spectacular. Was also involved in removing remains of a previous hut lower down and selecting the present track line where it exits at SH 46. Passed by on 16 Aug 2012 and noted ash on the road. Would love to re-visit the Hut Site again but the uphill drag might prolong the trip!! Ian B.
