Prime Minister John Key says it is ‘buyer beware’ as former Pike River boss, Peter Whittall, offers advice on mine safety.

Mr Whittall is establishing a mine safety consultancy company while facing

12 Department of Labour charges relating to the deaths of 29 men at Pike River mine.

Neither the website for his new venture, named Peter Whittall and Associates, or his business networking profile make any mention of the tragedy.

Mr Key says Mr Whittall has a high profile and company executives know who he is.

“I would have thought people would be a little bit dubious until, or if, he gets clearance of that, as there is so many questions surrounding the safety of the mine that exploded,” he says.

The families of the Pike miners says it is in poor taste for Whittall to start up the company.
