Prime Minister John Key has been cleared to fly to Antarctica this morning, despite fainting in a Christchurch restaurant last night.

Mr Key was taken to hospital in a police car after he collapsed when he got up at the end of his meal at Tutto Bene Italian restaurant at Merivale.

He was assessed by three specialists for two-and-a-half hours before being discharged.

Antarctica New Zealand has carried out its own risk assessment and is satisfied that the Prime Minister can travel this morning.

He was originally supposed to leave yesterday evening on board a United States Air Force Hercules, but the flight was delayed due to fog.

During the four-day scientific tour of Antartica he will stay at Scott Base and visit a number of research projects.

Regardless of any whining, it's interesting to see the "overwhelming public support for the National party" (to quote John Key). Why do we allow our politicians to blatantly lie? I mean, everybody just says "oh, he's a politician and politicians lie". Why do we have to continue to accept this? Why can't politicians be required to tell the truth?

@ Mia, Thanks Mia, It's nice that you are quoting lines from a National Party politican; however, the negativity in your other message kind of matches the whole troll fest whining of this forum !

Too many lies John Key... it's not too late you can still change your ways and be a good Prime Minister for your country, that will make you feel much better than you do now.

Just another way of taking the heat off other poor political decions i.e. the parata BS etc etc bouncy bennetts numbers manipulation .There is only one way the village idiot could be exhausted and that is running around Hawaii looking for Barrak Obama, someone should have told him Barrak was back at work where all good leaders should be. Any other person I would feel sorry for but I wouldn't put it past this clown to make him self up just for a bit of sympathy and another photo shoot.

I hear ya Jono, just not my style to put the slipper in when someone is down. Somethings are beyond politics but I can certainly understand many see it otherwise. No doubt we'll be back into it, next week.

tell him to go and wash his sins then he may feel abit better, but it is not going to change what they have done to us all in NZ. Appaulling and disgusting to think that the PM had other hidden agendas. That are no longer hidden any more.

@Katubaldy: if he was an honest and genuine person who was doing his best for NZ, then I would agree with you but he is a rich and self-serving fake, and he collapsed after returning from a long holiday in rich-man Hawaii... not after some exhaustive undertaking for the benefit of hard-hit NZers! That is why people are pointing the finger and laughing. And his ministers (Parata, Bennett, Collins, etc) are just as bad. And he WASTES taxpayer money on himself like there was no tomorrow - bodyguard in Antarctica indeed???? To protect him from penguins maybe???? What a loser.

I'm all for a good healthy political debate when its on offer but to go at someone when its a question of their own health,I tend to wait til they're back in the game. Not sure what the political issue is here? The guy fainted,it checked out ok, end of story. I'm sure there will be ample opportunity to discuss policy in the future just not today....
