There's one contestant in this year's American Idol competition that judge Randy Jackson - nor America - can't get enough of.

"General" Larry Platt, a 63-year-old civil rights veteran who auditioned in Atlanta, Georgia, has become an internet sensation with his original song, 'Pants On the Ground'.

"I'm so happy he's getting his day and his moment and I even like the message in his mind, his wisdom, that he's trying to impart on the young hip-hop community," Jackson said.

The next question is whether 'Pants On the Ground' could top the charts? Jackson thinks so.

"Dude, let's go. Let's get the remix, man! What? Give me Jay-Z, put Jay-Z on it," Jackson says.

Platt's song is a simple exhortation for young people to stop wearing their pants so low – "on the ground", as he puts it – because it makes them look "like a fool". He also laments the "gold" in their mouth and the way they wear their "hat turned sideways".

Platt has been a well-known civil rights activist in Georgia since the 1960s. In fact, September 4 is officially recognised as 'Larry Platt Day' in the southern US state, and has been so since 2001. He is not actually an enlisted army general.

He was disqualified from going further in the competition due to his age – 62. The upper limit for contestants is 28.
