DOC rangers plan to text message thousands of Gisborne locals as part of their PR campaign to warn them about the risks of swimming with Moko the dolphin.

An extra 20,000 people are expected in Gisborne on new year’s eve – and DOC says the dolphin’s popularity could prove dangerous.

Moko has proved a welcome distraction for surfers at Wainui Beach.

Coastlines co-founder Sam Judd was organising a beach cleanup event when he spotted the dolphin in the surf.

“I jumped in there with the camera and got a few shots and had a play round,” he said.

“He just wants to have a bit of fun with people, so great times here in Gisborne.”

It is events like Judd’s and the popular Rhythm and Vines festival that bring thousands to Gisborne over the summer. But the level of interaction between swimmers and the curious 300kg mammal is worrying experts.

“What we are saying is keep a common sense approach,” says Andy Barret of DOC. “Respect Moko – he’s a wild animal. He needs his space.”

Surf Life Saver Mike King says the dolphin provides “a bit of a risk”.

DOC rangers now plan to ‘bomb’ Gisborne locals with text messages advising them not to touch or surround Moko.

Although he was placid and playful today, experts warn he can also behave aggressively.
