A 10-year-old boy has died after the car he was travelling in rolled into a pond near Hokitika on the West Coast.
Another female child was earlier rescued from the vehicle, Fairfax reports.
West Coast police are at the scene of the incident at a gold mine site on Adair Rd at Ruatapu.
St John reports the girl was taken in a serious condition to Hokitika by ambulance and then transported by the Solid Energy Rescue Helicopter to Grey Base Hospital.
A man was also taken to hospital.
The driver of the four-wheel drive vehicle escaped and ran several kilometres for help around 7pm.
