Rocker Patti Smith used her set at Britain's End of the Road Festival on Sunday to voice her support for the imprisoned members of punk group Pussy Riot after they were sentenced to two years in jail last month.

Smith was among the stars who spoke out in defence of the bandmembers - Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich - during their trial. The singers were arrested after performing a protest song about Russian leader Vladimir Putin during a church gig in Moscow in March.

They were found guilty of hooliganism on 17 August and handed two year prison sentences, and Smith made sure the crowd at the music event in Dorset, south England on Sunday knew she was supporting the incarcerated trio.

She dedicated her set to the bandmembers and, according to fan posts on Twitter, changed the lyrics of her hit track Gloria to support Pussy Riot.

A Punk band of housewives, you have to laugh, dont you. Not of course that their in Jail for taking a dump in a Church, but for a protest therve achieved heaps of free press. Something for spin speak and marketing students to study.
