Disgraced Breakfast host Paul Henry has resigned from TVNZ, saying it is time for his actions to speak louder than his words.

Henry was halfway through a two-week suspension for racial slurs against Commonwealth Games organiser Sheila Dikshit and Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand before offering his resignation this evening.

In a statement released this evening Henry said it is no longer practical for him to do the job he was employed to do.

“It is also difficult for TVNZ to get on with the business of being a first-class broadcaster as long as I remain.

“I have apologised twice, and have meant every word. I again apologise to all those who were genuinely hurt by what I said.”

However, Henry remains defiant and apparently perplexed his remarks caused such a stir.

“I am astonished and dismayed that my comments have created a diplomatic incident. My style is conversational and of course unscripted. I walk the finest of lines and accept that I have inadvertently crossed it from time to time.”

Henry questioned the Prime Minister as to whether Sir Anand looks or sounds like a New Zealand, and howled with laughter when announcing the name of Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit’s name as “Dick Shit” when he was told it was pronounced “Dixit”.

TVNZ chief executive Rick Ellis had said he would take the weekend to decide Henry's future with the state broadcaster.

Prime Minister John Key says Mr Henry's resignation brings closure to the saga.

"This episode has been sad and regrettable," he said through a spokesperson. "Mr Henry's resignation brings closure to the matter and we should now put it behind us."

TVNZ had received more than 700 complaints about the Sir Anand comments and 3news.co.nz was inundated with comments both supporting Henry and criticising him.

Mr Ellis released his own statement this evening, again apologising to the Governor General and the Indian community.

“Paul has many loyal supporters and there will be those who question whether his resignation was the right outcome,” he says.

“I believe Paul has done the right thing. The reality is that his comments have split the community and damaged New Zealand’s international relationships, and there is no going back from that.

“I very much hope that Paul’s resignation will demonstrate his profound regret and offer an opportunity for healing.”

over 700 complaints out of over 4,000,000 people. that is just a joke. the one person on tvnz that wasn't bound up on political correctness and could have a laugh gets chopped down by the miserable minority. made a far better presenter than john key ever would be as a prime minister. come on nz, have a laugh. we arent communists afer all.

I think he was spot on. Her name is as funny as hell in English and it demonstrates the incredible arrogance of the Indian ruling class that they have made such a fuss about it.
India will be a plague on the earth, ripe with corruption and riddled with evi, the indian ruling class has kept that whole nation in the mid 19th century for far too long.

Paul Henry might be guilty of distasteful humour but nothing more.Being in the limelight means being more vulnerable to the THOUGHT POLICE,who value political correctness more than honesty.Pull your head out of the sand John Key.There has been no closure for this issue. Are we ever going to be safe from political correctness? As we can see it can do great harm.I am very sorry that Paul had to go through this nastiness.

I can understand the anguish of Sue and other rednecks who try in vain to save their dying "pure white" New Zealand society but they should know the the majority of immigrants are hard-workers and leave the rest of us to shame. Europe is dead, Asia is leading the worlds economy so if we're going to shut them out I'm afraid we'll be left behind very quickly.

Thats not racist, it's the truth!!

I'm Indian and I've learned a lot from this whole incident... even though the name "dikshit" is funny (even i laughed at it ) i dont like how paul said "the name was appropriate because she was indian" i dont get that? what does that even mean? the comments about the governer genereal were mean too. he was born in nz. i wasn't born here but ive lived here since i was 9 yrs old. i guess im not a kiwi even though i thought i was :( im really sad. it hurt my feelings. i did think paul henry's apology was sincere i forgave him and im sure most other indian people did too. i dont think he needed to resign? i dont know why he did that. what i find much much more upsetting than paul henry's comments is the COMMENTS OF NORMAL KIWIS on forums like this. everyone agrees with paul henry and says india is poor, dumb, the worst country in the world, indians should go back home, indian people are ugly and uneducated, and they are immigrants, and their skin is dark, their commewealth games is lame (these are real comments i read ).. wow. those people are the real racists. not paul henry. i dont know why everyone hates indian people. i sometimes wish i wasn't indian but its better than being a racist kiwi. actually ive never experienced "raicsm" in real life! i always thought everyone was nice. this whole incident ruined my positivity and naiviety and made me paranoid. i hate everyone now. i now believe that 70% of nzers are RACIST. they are too politically correct to say anything in real life. but they go online and write mean comments which hurt my feelings. only 30% of NZers are the NICE people. i wish more nzers were like that 30%. then the world would be a cool place.

Well, I will not dignify Henry's comments as "racial"! It is far worse than that! The word racism has lost its meaning and bringing in racism in place and out of place is not good. It gives an easy standard way-out for the culprit!! Paul Henry is an uncivilized barabarian living like a frog in a well. His world is limited to the Breaskfast TV. The man doesn't understand that abusing an elderly female head of state in India is simply not acceptable to India as a whole. Not surprising that the Govt of India intervened diplomatically by calling the NZ High Commissioner!

If New Zealanders support Paul Henry (they have a right to...but), then they are exposing in front of the world that they too are far behind in this new changed world order!
