A person has been hit and killed by a train at Avondale Railway Station.

Police and ambulance are at the scene and the station on Blockhouse Bay Road has been closed.

The incident, which happened about 7am, is expected to cause major disruption to the rail network.

The Britomart to Morningside and Waitakere to Henderson routes are still running as normal.

But train passengers on other routes are being advised to find alternative ways of getting to work.
