A female pedestrian was killed after being struck by a train near New Lynn, just after 4 this afternoon.

Police said the woman was aged in her 50s and they were making enquiries to formally identify her and notify her next of kin.

She was dead when St Johns Ambulance arrived shortly after the incident at the corner of Clark Rd and Portage Rd.

The woman’s body was stuck on the coupling unit at the front of the train and undertakers were called to remove it.

The Police Serious Crash Unit are now investigating.

The train stopped and partially blocked Portage Rd but has now been moved.

West Auckland trains were disrupted for most of the evening, and buses were used to take passengers between Avondale and New Lynn stations.

Police will not be making further comment until next of kin have been notified which is likely to be in the morning.
