Penguin droppings have been hitting people queuing to see the giant pandas at Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo.

The curious Rockhopper penguins have been standing along the edge of their enclosure since work began on their neighbours' enclosure, reports BBC News.

"We're hoping it's not a case of monochrome jealousy, but one or two of our rockhoppers seem to have had surprisingly good aim," said Gary Wilson, Edinburgh Zoo's director of business operations.

"We're just looking into a solution right now, probably in the form of a glass panel so that the visitors' view of the penguins isn't obscured."

While some of the visitors could see the funny side of the situation, the fishy dollops weren't a welcome addition to their trip.

"It just missed me and my family and it was really oily and stank of fish," said one man to BBC News. "It was disgusting."

The giant pandas, Tian Tian and Yang Guang, went on display last week after a long trip from Sichuan province in China. They are the first giant pandas to live in Britain in nearly two decades.

Zoo officials have spent the past five years securing the panda loan, which is expected to boost Scottish tourism.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland will pay more than £600,000 a year to China for the loan of Tian Tian and Yang Guang, not including the expense of importing bamboo from the Netherlands.

They will be kept in two separate enclosures for a few months until they are ready to be introduced to each other.

The zoo also plans to put four hidden "panda cams" in their enclosures and stream the footage online to attract viewers from around the world.

They are expected to spend 10 years at the zoo, and officials are keeping their fingers crossed for a fruitful romance. A baby panda would be certain to boost the already heightened visitor numbers.
