The Hazardous Materials team has been called to a recycling plant in Auckland after toxic chemicals were dumped there.

One person is being treated in hospital, but fire crews say there's no danger for the surrounding residents of Avondale.

Tony McDonald from the Fire Service says it's still not clear if the toxic waste was dumped on purpose.

“Somebody has put nitric acid in with the rubbish and when EnviroWaste started to work on it, it started to smoke,” he says.

“One person from the premise was taken to hospital for observation, with breathing difficulty.”

Fire crews are still damping down at the Patiki Road refuse plant after they were called out at 6.30 this morning.
