New Zealand film buffs have their fingers crossed for Sir Peter Jackson and Weta Digital at the Bafta awards today having watched The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn lift a Golden Globe.
Weta's Joe Letteri, Jamie Beard, Keith F Miller and Wayne Stables are nominated for special visual effects work on the motion-capture 3D animation of The Adventures of Tintin.
While Joe Letteri, Daniel Barrett, Dan Lemmon, and R Christopher White are nominated for work on Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Sir Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg have a chance for best animated film with The Adventures of Tintin.
Hosted by Stephen Fry, the awards take place at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London.
The Artist, a black-and-white silent film by French director Michel Hazanavicius, is the bookies' favourite for the best picture award.
It is up against British spy thriller Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy, family drama The Descendants, The Help and Drive.
The Adventures of Tintin picked up a Golden Globe for best animated feature film but has been snubbed in Oscar nominations this year. Weta Digital is in the running for the visual effects award with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The Oscars are held on February 26.
American-born Letteri is already a four-time Oscar winner for Avatar, King Kong and two films in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Weta was formed in 1993 by filmmakers including Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk. It later split into Weta Digital, which creates digital effects, and Weta Workshop, which creates physical effects.
