Steven Joyce's trip to Europe last month cost $56,700 and NZ First leader Winston Peters is complaining about the minister's "opulent practices".
"A minimum wage earner working 35 hours a week gets paid just under $25,000 a year - that trip cost taxpayers the equivalent of two minimum wage jobs," he said on Thursday.
"That puts the minister's opulent practices in perspective and should make New Zealanders tear their hair out."
Mr Peters established the cost of the trip through a written parliamentary question.
Mr Joyce, one of the cabinet's most senior ministers, visited the EU headquarters in Brussels and went to Poland, Germany and the UK.
He travelled with one staff member.
